It seems like starting Unity on Ubuntu 18.04 doesn't work. Output from xinit.log:

> Executing profile: unity
> Using XDG session: ubuntu
> Executing XDG session command: init --user
> init: unrecognized option '--user'
> Profile command exited with exit code 1

I've installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 18.04 and the only problem with Unity are bug 6190 and bug 7208. There are no traces of upstart left, so there should never be an invocation of "init --user".

Perhaps some incomplete upgrade from an earlier version of Ubuntu?
