The GUI for manually adding desktop files in TLDC should be able to copy an existing .desktop file for customization. 

Use cases:

 * Sites that want to give a different name to applications compared to what they are called in the original .desktop file.

 * Sites that want to modify the command line of an existing application, for example adding username,server,port to the groupwise client cmdline.
